By using an elaborate computer simulation we have succeeded in designing a particularly ergonomic interior. With 3-D technology and a click of the mouse, we can exactly replicate human patterns of behaviour and movement – for example, fastening a seat belt or turning on the radio. We can even take on the driver's perspective to determine whether the steering wheel provides a proper view of the instrument cluster or to see just how visible the mirrors are.
People are of course all different. That’s why we’ve fed data into our computer for thousands of people who represent a broad spectrum of the population. They include factors such as sex, age, body size or sitting posture. So you and your R-Class can make a well-rehearsed team. The driver’s seat helps you in this regard with the optional lumbar support (standard for R 500 4MATIC).
In the first and second rows you can sit back and relax in the executive chairs (in the 5-seater, the two outer seats in the second row), which offer a very high level of comfort. For the ultimate in seating luxury, you can choose heated and ventilated front seats. Or the multicontour seats which are available as an optional extra for the driver and front passenger.[1] These seats are equipped with inflatable air chambers which adjust to your body and provide better support.
If you would like improved lateral support – especially during cornering – you can order front sports seats with higher side bolsters on the backrests. These seats, which are included in the interior sports package[1], are electrically adjustable and are upholstered in Alcantara/ARTICO man-made leather.
The memory package is another practical optional extra. As well as offering full power adjustment for the front seats, the system can store the positions of the driver’s seat, head restraint, exterior mirrors and steering column for up to three people.
