Refined driving means travelling with poise and assurance. Making sure you can do this is the responsibility of the newly-developed Active Body Control system. It is standard in the SL 500, SL 600 and in the AMG models, and available as an option for the SL 350. Ten sensors monitor the driving situation and the vehicle’s handling, in order to minimise lurch and pitch movements when moving off and braking, as well as to reduce lateral movements when cornering. The “Sport” mode features an improved response, a firmer damping set-up and an even smaller roll angle. This results in an even more dynamic driving experience and enhances safety, too – when taking rapid evasive action, for example.
Speed-sensitive steering is another comfort-enhancing feature. It supports the steering force in direct relation to the speed. The system guarantees the lightest of movements when parking and a stable straight-course behaviour at high speeds. Direct-steer is available as an option. It offers an even more direct ratio when negotiating tight bends and when parking or manoeuvring. It reduces the steering wheel movements required, thus enhancing comfort and safety. Furthermore, there are fewer steering-wheel turns from lock to lock.
