Our engineers accepted an ambitious challenge when they set about developing a drive system for the SLR. The design brief was for a multi-talented powerplant, equally adept at performing in everyday traffic as it is under extreme conditions.
The sound alone says everything about the AMG 5.5-litre V8 Kompressor powerplant. Its impulsive energy has echoes of the 300 SL from the 1950s, while the maximum output of 460 kW (626 hp) enables the SLR to race from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3.8 seconds if necessary. Further evidence of the power within is provided by the engine’s torque delivery, with a peak torque of 780 Nm from 3250 rpm to 5000 rpm.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Coupé – with the car’s Formula 1 credentials encapsulated in its name, we considered it our duty to scrutinise its handling dynamics with particular care and under extreme conditions. The outcome more than justifies our efforts: the SLR Coupé unites the manoeuvrability of a race car with unbridled acceleration on straight roads. Positioning the compact cylinder block behind the front wheels and therefore closer to the centre of the car gives the SLR Coupé exceptional handling and combines with the carbon-fibre lightweight construction to give it even greater agility too.
The SLR Coupé doesn’t need a race track to unleash its strengths however, it can do so in everyday road conditions too. Slipping behind the wheel of the SLR Coupé is a special feeling in itself. Carbon-fibre sports bucket seats, manual gearshift buttons just like in a race car and clearly arranged instrument cluster dials – welcome to a Formula 1 cockpit made for the road.
In a nutshell: power and agility galore, coupled with comfort of the highest order. The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Coupé is the Silver Arrow of the 21st century.
