When Mercedes-Benz first unveiled PRE-SAFE® in 2002, the primary aim was to combat the problem of the invaluable seconds that go to waste just before an accident happens. The optional PRE-SAFE® safety system from Mercedes-Benz can make highly effective use of this time. The sensors at the heart of the ESP® and BAS systems detect critical driving situations such as heavy oversteer or understeer, critical steering movements, panic braking and emergency stops.
The vehicle electronics system processes this information and initiates preventive measures to protect occupants in response to typical dangerous situations. These measures include automatic tensioning of the front seat belts, automatic positioning of the front-passenger seat (if electrically adjustable and equipped with the memory function) and automatic closure of side windows and optional tilting/sliding sunroof or panoramic glass roof.
In the event of panic braking from a speed of more than 50 km/h, the adaptive brake lights are also activated. The flashing brake lights warn traffic approaching from behind more effectively than using a conventional brake light. If you were travelling faster than 70 km/h, the hazard warning lights are also automatically activated after emergency braking.
