From the crumple zone and the passenger safety cell to airbags and the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) – the history of Mercedes-Benz is filled with countless milestones in automotive safety. The latest example of our groundbreaking thinking is the new A-Class. At the official Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) crash test the A-Class earned the highest possible score, five stars, and thus the distinction of being the safest vehicle in its class. This is due in large part to the specially developed sandwich concept with an intelligent crumple zone design. In the event of a frontal collision, this construction concept causes the engine and transmission to slide under the car rather than penetrating the passenger compartment. This results in a much more effective front crumple zone in comparison to other vehicles in its class, ensuring greater protection for the occupants. The raised seating position also adds a degree of safety in the event of a side-on collision.
Adaptive front airbags and head/thorax bags that protect the head and chest also belong to the latest safety innovations. And that is by no means the end of the story. The exceptional test results are a great incentive for us to stay one step ahead when it comes to safety.
