There are two B-Class diesel models to choose from: the B 180 CDI with an output of 80 kW (109 hp) and the B 200 CDI with 103 kW (140 hp). Torque figures of up to 250 and 280 Nm respectively ensure power to spare and pleasurable driving.
Dynamic as they are, the diesel engines also can keep a very low profile – as you’ll notice from their economical consumption and low exhaust emissions.
The diesel engines undercut the strict limits defined in the EU4 standard by a large margin thanks to a specially developed diesel particulate filter. It strips out up to 95 per cent of soot particles from the exhaust gas. Unlike conventional filter systems, this diesel particulate filter operates without fuel additives. This prevents the formation of ash residue that could clog the filter channel over time. The particulate filter in the CDI models regenerates by means of the strategic adjustment of various engine management functions. In this way, it is possible to raise the temperature of the exhaust air so that the particles that have collected in the filter are burnt off. This results in low emissions after a high mileage, moreover, the filter has a long service life, too.
(B 180 CDI: fuel consumption combined: 5.2–6.0 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 137–158 g/km; B 200 CDI: fuel consumption combined: 5.4–6.3 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 140–165 g/km)[1]
