It is not for nothing that the Amsterdam-based firm UNStudio is often described as one of Europe's most innovative architecture companies. It was founded in 1988 by Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos. Their most prominent projects include the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam, the Möbius House, the development of the Arnheim Central project, the restructuring of a pier in the harbour of Genoa, a department store in Seoul and the concept – developed in collaboration with United Architects – on display at the New York Museum of Modern Art for the new construction of Ground Zero.
Working on the Mercedes-Benz Museum project, UNStudio was not only responsible for the design concept. It was also instrumental in developing technologies for its implementation. Studio founder Ben van Berkel summed up the project like this: "The is a complex construction and the completion deadline was very tight. The only solution was to monitor as far as possible the geometry of the building using the latest computer technology. Digital monitoring of the geometry enabled us to incorporate each adaptation quickly and efficiently. In this way, we were able to assess the impact of each adjustment on all other aspects of the building.
