The SSKL – engine displacement more than seven litres, 300 hp output and 235 km/h max. speed
The last stage of evolution of the highly respected Mercedes-Benz SSKL started in the Berlin AVUS race in 1932. Working on his own, private driver Manfred von Brauchitsch fitted a streamlined body to the racing car. Achieving an average speed of 194.2 km/h, the German driver won the race ahead of Rudolf Caracciola, who was driving for Alfa Romeo at that time.
The success of Mercedes-Benz vehicles in so many high-profile races was, of course, beneficial to sales on the domestic and international markets. The Daimler-Benz AG advertising department knew how to capitalise on this. VIPs throughout the world, including Prinz Max zu Schaumburg-Lippe, Fürst Esterhazy and the actress Lilian Harvey all succumbed to the charms of the large supercharged Mercedes and were part of a glamorous collection of Mercedes-Benz clients.
