In the subsequent years up until 1964, works and private drivers won numerous rallies and races in the "tail-fin Mercedes", as this model was affectionately nicknamed. Among the top-ranking names on the winners' lists were Schock/Moll, Kling/Günzler as well as Böhringer, Lang, Knoll, Eger, Glemser and Braungart – and the female drivers, Ewy Rosqvist and Ursula Wirth.
Another highly competitive car of this era was the 230 SL, popularly known as the Pagoda. It was in this car that Böhringer/Kaiser clinched a much-acclaimed victory in the marathon Liège–Sofia–Liège Rally in 1963.
