1978 saw the advent of super-fast V8 coupés. Four Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC vehicles with 230 hp engines and automatic transmissions competed in the arduous South America Rally. Two of them finished at the top of the victory rostrum. One year later, the near-production rally car bore the designation 450 SLC 5.0. Its bored-out eight-cylinder engine generated 290 hp – sufficient power to secure the first four places in the 5000 km Bandama Rally in Africa. The winners were Hannu Mikkola and Arne Hertz.
In 1980, Daimler-Benz entered 300 hp 500 SLC cars in all races of the Rally World Championship. Up against tough competition, the teams of Waldeggard/Thorszelius and Recalde/Streimel scored a double victory in the Bandama Rally at the end of the season. This was the last success of a works team in rallying. In December 1980, the Board of Management at Daimler-Benz AG decided to withdraw from the World Championship for reasons of capacity.
The numerous victories in rally sport over many years demonstrated the reliability of the near-production Mercedes-Benz cars to potential customers and millions of TV viewers all over the world.
