1908: Success in the French Grand Prix
Other highlights before World War I were the successes of Daimler and Benz at the French Grand Prix in 1908. "The Great Nation" had wanted to demonstrate that the fastest racing cars were French but the laurels went to Germany. A first and a fifth place for the 140 hp Mercedes vehicles and second and third ranks for the Benz & Cie racing cars from Mannheim was evidence of the superior qualities of the German brands.
