Together with its commitment to Formula 1 with the adapted W 196 racing car, in 1955 Mercedes-Benz steered a winning course with the 300 SL touring car, as well as with the newly-developed 300 SLR racing car. Among the works drivers were, apart from the Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio, Karl Kling, Hans Herrmann, the Englishman Stirling Moss and the Italian Piero Taruffi. In the 1955 Formula 1 season these ace drivers ran their first race in Argentina. This three-hour-long contest, in scorching heat, was won by Juan Manuel Fangio. His teammate Stirling Moss won his first race driving a W 196 on his own home ground in Aintree. Competitors had little to be amused about, because with Fangio, Kling and Taruffi, the Stuttgart team celebrated an undisputed fourfold victory in England. At season’s end Fangio was the one who had won the most points, becoming Formula 1 world champion before Moss, who always lacked that little portion of luck to win the coveted title.
