With the swift SLR 300 - competition number 722 - Stirling Moss won a victory which remains memorable to this day: on April 30, 1955, he and his co-pilot Denis Jenkinson won the 1000 mile "Mille Miglia" competition in ten hours, seven minutes and 48 seconds, at an average speed of 157.65 km/h, setting a record that has remained unequalled to this very day. The racy SLR 300 sports car was derived directly from the 196 W Formula 1 racing car. Its 8-cylinder in-line engine was enlarged from 2.5 to 3.0 litres displacement, delivering between 276 and 310 hp. In spite of its nominal inferiority - Jaguar had 3.5-litre, and Ferrari even 4.4-litre engines -with its further victories in this season in Germany, Sweden, Ireland and Sicily, the SLR 300 secured the Manufacturers’ Championship for sports cars.
